The first act opens at a party in the living room of Violetta Valery, a Parisian courtesan. Among the guests are Violetta's friends Viscount Gastone de Letorières, Flora Bervoix (also a courtesan) and Flora's protector Marquis d'Obigny. Violetta's protector Baron Douphol and doctor Grenvil are also present. Gastone introduces his friend Alfredo Germont and tells Violetta he is a secret admirer who daily enquired after her during her illness. The baron is angered and refuses the invitation to give a toast. Alfredo then agrees to do it in his stead.
