Tosca is an opera composed by Giacomo Puccini, based on Victorien Sardou's 1887 play, La Tosca. It premiered on 14 January 1900 in Rome and was an instant popular success, despite the reserved response from the critics.
The opera takes place in Rome during the Napoleonic Wars. It tells the story of Floria Tosca, an opera singer, and her lover, the artist Mario Cavaradossi. The corrupt police chief, Scarpia, is after Cavaradossi, and Tosca is caught in the middle of the conflict.
In the second act of the opera, Tosca sings the aria "Vissi d'arte" as she expresses her disbelief and anguish over the ultimatum given to her by Scarpia. She reflects on her devotion to her art and her faith, and questions why she must suffer so much. This powerful piece showcases Puccini's mastery of musical storytelling and highlights the emotional turmoil of the central character.
